Come 25th August and we will witness the 5th edition of NASSCOM EMERGEOUT Conclave at the Shangri-La Hotel, New Delhi. Partnered with Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the event is being anticipated by the mobile developers’ community as a forum to create awareness about their products amongst their target market.

The center point of the Conclave will lie in understanding how emerging and start-up companies can reap economic benefits out of upcoming web-based social platforms, mobile devices and AppStore. Vijay will be speaking on a current hot topic: “Smarter and Faster: How will cheaper smart phones and 3G networks impact the mobile ecosystem?”

Companies who have developed applications on the iPhone, Blackberry, Google Android, Nokia OviStore, etc. will be short-listed and showcased to a jury which will then select the Top 10 mobile applications. Vijay is a part of the esteemed panel to evaluate the best of the best mobile apps that are part of the ecosystem as game changers in India, along with Jasmeet Gandhi, Mouli Raman, Sandeep Sawhney, Prasanto Kumar Roy, etc.

Today, at IAMAI + Nokia meetup, I met many of my facebook/linkedin “buddies” for first time in real world! The best thing was that I already had seen their status messages/photo posts and lot of other information beforehand.

At one point of time, offline messaging (read: Email) was the only type of messaging. Now you have instant message, Public Wall, Scrap Book (Orkut), broadcast messaging (Status message of FB / Linkedin) and live updates (Twitter /Jaiku). Top it up with options availble to device specific options : you have SMS, USSD and even PIN messaging (Sending a message to another blackberry device without going to mail server! )
Top it all up with multimedia messaging and variations of Push and Pull. Whoa! there are so many options.

I do not think innovation in messaging is going to stop. Incidentally, always on, always-with-me devices will keep giving us reasons to evole to new messaging types and locations.

There will be many more types of messaging I can see. We should be doing Video messaging / Video broadcast to Avatar based messaging to text over IP, to cross platform messaging.

Finally I think messaging will be structured like an open RSS based application.

You will be able to read “messages” in one single message box. Your emails will be in RSS (Google already did it), your friends Facebook status message will be RSS, your twitter feeds will be in RSS and even your all other new messaging formats will be made available in RSS.

Obviously your SMS will also be available as an RSS feed from operator : -)

All the above does mean we will see a new version of RSS coming, which will take care of authentication / security and sessions aspect of it. I hope it includes the “push” aspect of it too.

So some days ( in multiple of 365 units) later we should be able to consolidate our messaging to include our various today’s and future social messaging. It should be pushed to my always-with-me device sequence based on priority and social profile of “buddies/friends”.

Aah, I can’t wait to be there.

We are in business of making most out the mobile phone. There are many things your mobile can do today. With fantastic hard disk sizes and processing capabilities, a phone is less just-a-phone and more of a general purpose all-in-one device. Adding various device-side or network-side applications, you can enhance your everyday experience to new levels.

Today most of the Value Added Services business is based on entertainment value to user. It definitely is heading towards more utilities and services for everyday use.

I love exploring how others see and use their mobile devices. In this hunt, I spotted these two videos worth a dekko.

First one is from Google as part of mobile tricks and second is presentation by Nokia ‘s Anssi Vanjoki (whom I am meeting this week .

Google Mobile tricks:

In the second video, Anssi describes some key finds of user behaviors and how Nokia is leveraging them.

Browsing remains #1 killer mobile application and messaging takes the second spot. Will social networking be an independent application or remain part of whole browsing traffic only?

Here is second video from Nokia World 2007

Do you think Nokia will be able to make itself a great services company ?

I say, why not.

Look at Apple – from a computer maker to world’s largest (digital) music seller and so much more (yes, Steve Jobs is the biggest factor!) .
A great company reinvents itself from time to time and challenges status quo in the markets.

My views on Ovi, Apple and GYM’s (Google/Yahoo/Microsoft) mobile application/services business in a post later.
